The history of backgammon
You won't believe it but backgammon has a long history from centurys ago was made from the most primitive materials, and with other rules and pieces but the basic idea was the same all along the way.
The most closest board game which most resembles the backgammon board which is played today was founded in the year of 1628 and was made from Vasa.
There are history writings that say that the ancient Egyptians played a game called senet, which is vert similiar to backgammon and was also controlled by a dice. Another game which is similiar to backgamon was played in ancient Mesopotamia. There are also writings that show that similiar games existed as far back as 3000 BC.

There are a few games that the ancient Romans played and those games are very similiar to backgammon of today.
The first one called "Ludus duodecim scriptorum" which translates into "game of twelve lines", which is using a board with 3 rows of 12 points each, and the pieces are moved on the three rows by the dice numbers. This game doesn't have a more explained documentation.
Another game is called "Tabula" which is translated into "table". this game is much closer to the backgammon of today because its includes a board with 24 points, but three dice were used in this game, and the players pieces were moved in opposite directions.
At the turn of the 11th century, a parsian poet called Ferdowsi, describes a game called Burzoe with the invention of the table games, the game is called nard and is played with dice made from ivory and teak.

The modern backgammon first appeared in france in the 11th century, and became a main game for gamblers. In the 17th century the table version arrived to sweden.
A person called Edmund Hoyle wrote an article about the game backammon in 1743. This article described the game, and its rules, mostly like backgammon is played today.
The name backgammon is a combination from the english word back, and from the German word "Gamen" which means game. This word was officially recognized since 1650.
