Learn how to play backgammon

backgammon strategy

Altough backgamon seems to be a less complex game with no need for strategies, it does in fact have a set of strategys. In backgammon the player has less control on his pieces than checkers for example, because he doesn't know, or can't be sure about his next movement, because the numbers that the dice show each turn are totally random. But you can follow one of the following strategies on this page

The most simple and used startegy is to not to have a strategy, just play go with your instincts and by experience.

Holding game startegy is when the player keeps a few of his pieces on the opponent board 1-6 points, so the player can gain advantage by capturing his opponents pieces on the opponent side. So the opponents pieces will have to start from the other side of the board each time they are captured.

Prime game startegy is when the player is trying to build a wall of doubles (or more) of pieces, at a six points in a row. This wall is ually built somewhere between the players 1 to 12 points. This wall gives the player a huge advantage because his opponent can't go anywhere near this wall, and the opponent is stuck with his movement. The only thing which may not be good is this strategy is that at some point of the game this wall must be broken in order to win and risk the chance for the player pieces to got captured by the opponent.

Blitz startegy is a when the player tries as soon as possible, to close the opponents movement for his pieces that are placed on his 24 point at the start of the game, or for the opponent pieces that were captured. This strategy sticks the opponents movement for a couple of turns, or even for most of the game, and gives the player a huge advantage, and almost a safe win if he is doing it right.

If you choose some strategy for your backgammon game, first of all don't tell your opponent which strategy you are sticking to, and remember to stick to your strategy during the entire game, otherwise it won't work, but also remember to do it wisely. Another thing is to try to change your strategy from game to game, so your opponent won't recognize your strategy and play against this strategy.

A Doubling Cube

A cubical block, larger than a regular cube, with the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 marked on its faces.

Doubling Cube

It is used for keeping track of the increase in stakes of the game , the player who next has the right to double. The cube starts in the middle with the number 64 facing up. When you offer a double, you turn the cube to its next higher value and pass it to your opponent. If he accepts your double, he places the cube on his side of the board and becomes the owner of the cube.

Good luck.
